Summer Wedding Venues

Sharlene & Craig Suttar

Well, the Scottish summer is almost over (this year it was a Wednesday!) and it’s been our busiest ever with up to 5 bookings a week. Always a pleasure and rarely a chore.

Some of the “new” venues for us, which we’ve been itching to play for years, included:
Aswanley, the gorgeous country estate steading conversion near Huntly;

Boturich Castle, with its gorgeous marquee on the banks of Loch Lomond, near Balloch;

Eden Court Theatre, with its great acoustics and grand staircase in The Bishops’ Palace, Inverness;

Burn House, the magnificent Country House Estate near Edzell in Angus, where the staff and “guardians” couldn’t have been more helpful;

Camusdarach Beach near Arisaig on the West Coast – location for many a Hollywood film, including Local Hero;

And quite possibly the most picturesque, fairytale wedding venue in the country – Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie (pictured) on the road to the Skye Bridge. We had the honour of singing at the ceremony here too – that was a real thrill.

These venues are all unique and well worth considering for your wedding dance.

2014 was our busiest year to date and 2015 has even more confirmed weddings already! John Legend’s “All of Me” was by far the most popular song for a first dance. This year, it looks like Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” is a strong contender for the top slot.

Here are the lists of the first dance songs, father/daughter songs and a few other requests from last year.

Wonderland live and wedding CD

Wonderland wedding CD

We’ve put as much information as possible on our website to allow our brand new prospective clients to see and hear exactly what we’re all about – especially our live video section. Nothing can complement this better than actually seeing the band live in action so with this in mind here is a list of our October bookings:

4 Inverness

10 Fort William

11 Peterhead

12 Banff

17 Fort William

18 Inverness

24 Aberdeen

25 Inverness

Please get in touch for more details if you’d like to come along to any of these dates. Most of these are weddings, so please give us as much notice as possible so we can ask the couple’s permission to invite you.

As well as the live videos online we find our wedding showcase CD has been incredibly helpful. The CD contains over 70 short soundclips of songs that feature regularly during a typical wedding dance with Wonderland. The list includes intro, ceilidh, buffet and finalé music so our clients get an idea of our vast repertoire. Nothing is set in stone though and experience has taught us that every wedding dance is unique that’s why we always ask for a list of the couple’s personal favourite songs a couple of weeks in advance. These can be absolutely ANY songs at all and we’ll mix them in throughout the evening.

Please get in touch ASAP for a free copy of our wedding CD and detailed quote. Even if you haven’t confirmed your date and venue just let us know roughly where and when and we’ll send you our wedding pack.

Wedding fairs

Every engaged couple should attend at least one wedding fair. These events bring together dozens, sometimes hundreds, of local wedding suppliers under one roof. With so much to organise, a well planned day at a wedding fair will save you a lot of time and hopefully money too – lots of suppliers will have special offers available on the day.
One handy tip – most suppliers that you chat to will ask for your contact details, wedding date and venue (if already booked) so to save you writing this information out numerous times why not print out a few dozens copies to hand out.
Please check our wedding fairs page to see where Wonderland will be exhibiting over he next few months.

The first dance – no pressure!

Appleby 2

A great start to the night

I usually don’t mention this to our couples until one week before their reception but i think it would be appreciated known well in advance – going by the relief I see on a lot of grooms’ faces!

The usual procedure when Wonderland perform your first song is as follows:
When you are ready I will announce “Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome onto the dancefloor for their first dance – Mr & Mrs …..”;
after one minute or so I then ask the top table / bridal party to join you;
after another minute I then invite the rest of your guests.

This ensures a full dancefloor at the start of the reception and also takes any pressure off you left dancing alone for 3 or 4 minutes!

This is not set in stone – some of our couples want their first dance to be theirs alone, which we will obviously respect. And on a few occasions the couple have actually choreographed a whole dance routine for their chosen first song! A great start to the night.

20th Anniversary Party

A huge thank you to the 300 guests that travelled far and wide – to all the musicians, venue staff, technicians and caterers.And most of all to my wife Catherine – whose love, trust and respect allows me to have the best job in the world. I do believe I am the luckiest man on the planet!Steve and wife Catherine

Wonderland nominated for VOWS Award! A mad-hat-trick!

Thanks to all our lovely brides over the past 12 months for voting for us. We have reached the shortlist for another VOWS Award – the Scottish Wedding Industry Suppliers’ “Oscars”.
We were first nominated in 2011 and were totally overwhelmed when we went on to win. We were fortunate enough to reached the shortlist again last year so this year’s nomination is our hat-trick (or in Wonderland style should that be a mad-hat-trick?!?!)
It’s a huge category this year – with 9 other acts competing for the “Musicians and Entertainers” Award. This makes it extremely tough but also even more special for the overall winner.
The ceremony takes place in Edinburgh on Monday 25th November. This promises to be a great night out with this year’s theme being “Las Vegas” so we’re hoping for an Elvis Tribute and Steve may get out his Blue Suede Shoes!
Reaching the shortlist is all down to our brides and grooms being extremely satisfied with our service and this is a real honour for us. Sincere thanks once again – we truly love our job and this recognition makes it all the more worthwhile.

Wedding Insurance

We are currently waiting for another batch of Wedding Insurance leaflets (which we usually send out with all our enquiries) so I thought it would be useful to highlight this important and often overlooked subject.

Once you’ve set your date and with the spiralling costs involved, wedding insurance should really be at the top of your to-do list. There are dozens of suppliers out there (Google search) and we’ve mentioned a couple on our Links page ( including John Lewis who offer a policy with £10,000 cover for a one-off premium of only £58.
