Hogmanay Show – the best yet

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrfHdaEZvkI&feature=player_embedded

Here we are playing She Seels Sanctuary by The Cult – this was an audience-shot video taken at 1.40 am on 1/1/12 in the Nevis Centre, Fort William.

This was our 8th consecutive year playing Lochaber’s biggest Hogmanay Party – the first for singer Claire. She had never been so nervous in her life – no wonder, 750 paying punters, huge stage and fantastic PA – but there was no need, she done good!

So much so we were immediately asked back again next year. For those that want to book early (it always sells out) please contact the Nevis Centre direct on 01397 700707.

Tickets were £16 in 2011 so there may be a slight increase for 2012. It’s on from 8pm till 2am and features Wonderland and The Fergie MacDonald Ceilidh Band, with piper and fireworks at the bells. We love it!

Wonderland on iPhone App

Wonderland has just joined the most downloaded wedding app in the UK and it’s called, funnily enough, Wedding UK.
It’s a planner AND supplier directory so you can lay down your plan and make enquiries from your iPhone. The Android version will be live in a fortnight.
It’s currently the highest ranking wedding app in the lifestyle charts and we’re proud to be part of it. Another seven of our fellow 2011 VOWS Awards winners are also registered so if you have an iPhone or iPad please search the App store for Wedding UK.

Clocks back by 30 days!

Well that was a first – last night i played a solo gig for a coach party in the Alexandra Hotel in Fort William. It was part of a 4 day “Turkey n Tinsel” deal where each night is a different festive occasion. Last night was their Hogmanay so at 10pm i did a countdown and played Aul Lang Syne!
Sounds ridiculous but everyone had such a laugh. So much for changing the clocks back one hour – try 30 days!

Last minute changes on the night

Ah the wonders of technology.
At a wedding in Inverness recently I did the usual routine – after setting up and a quick sound check I introduced myself to the bride and groom and ran through what will happen at the start of the evening.
Panic set in when the bride asked if she could have a different first song to the one previously arranged!
A quick check of my song list showed I didn’t have her new song on file!!!
Never wanting to disappoint a bride on her big day I took a deep breath and realised the hotel had wi-fi. After obtaining the password from reception I was able to log in to my iTunes account and download the new first song straight onto the iPad, which I use for all my backing tracks, ceilidh and dj sets. Problem solved, panic over, happy couple!

BTW the song was Be My Baby by the Ronettes.

I always confirm any special requests, including the all-important first song, at least two weeks in advance. But now I know we can cope with any last minute changes. In the immortal words of mr Simon “keep the customer satisfied”!

LOCAL PRESS ARTICLE

The Lochaber News / Highland News ran this lovely article about Wonderland receiving the VOWS Award this week. For the sake of my lo-res jpeg here is the copy in full:

WEDDING BAND STEALS THE SILVER
A Lochaber-based wedding band was celebrating last week at Scotland’s wedding “Oscars” – the VOWS Awards 2011.
Wonderland, fronted by Arisaig man Steve Brown, topped the music and entertainment category at the event attended by more than 600 industry peers at the Hilton, Glasgow.
VOWS stands for Voted Outstanding Wedding Supplier of the year and is a celebration of businesses in the Scottish wedding industry which have been nominated for the awards by happy newlyweds for: “exceptional levels of service”.
Now in it’s seventh year, the awards attracted more than 12,000 nominations and
100 Scottish wedding companies made the shortlist.
It is the first time Wonderland have won a VOWS Award, much to the delight of Mr Brown.
He said: “We almost can’t take in the fact we’ve won. We’ve been in the business for 20 years but we’ve only bee doing weddings for three of them – it is wonderful to win – thanks so much to all who voted for us”.

New wedding venues

We’re on holiday! Instead of the usual week in the Canaries we’ve decided on a road trip – visit a few friends, catch a couple of gigs, and visit some lovely hotels. So I suppose it’s a bit of a working holiday really! We’re meeting with the wedding co-ordinators at Cameron House Hotel on Loch Lomond and Smith’s Hotel in Gretna Green, two outstanding wedding venues which we hope to play in the not too distant. Lindsay Jones from Cameron House was also noiminated for a VOWS Award this year. Here’s a picture of me receiving ours.
